چکیده
OBJECTIVE To determine the efficacy of oolong tea for lowering plasma glucose in type 2 diabetic patients in Miaoli, Taiwan. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS A total of 20 free-living subjects who had type 2 diabetes and took hyperglycemic drugs as prescribed were enrolled in the present study. Subjects consumed oolong tea (1,500 ml) or water for 30 days each in a randomized crossover design. Tea was not consumed for 14 days prior to treatments. RESULTS Relative to initial concentrations, oolong tea markedly lowered concentrations of plasma glucose (from 229 +/- 53.9 to 162.2 +/- 29.7 mg/dl, P < 0.001) and fructosamine (from 409.9 +/- 96.1 to 323.3 +/- 56.4 micromol/l, P < 0.01), whereas the water control group had not changed (208.7 +/- 61.0 vs. 232.3 +/- 63.1 mg/dl for glucose and from 368.4 +/- 85.0 to 340.0 +/- 76.1 micromol/l for fructosamine). CONCLUSIONS Oolong tea may be an effective adjunct to oral hypoglycemic agents in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Inhibitory effect of oolong tea on the oxidative state of low density lipoprotein (LDL).
In the present study, we investigated the anti-oxidant activity of oolong tea in an oxidation model using human low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Oolong tea suppressed the oxidation of LDL induced by 2-2'-azobis 4-methoxy-2,4-dimethyvaleronitrile (V70) in a dose-dependent manner, that is, it prolonged the lag time to 114.3%, 138% and 199.9% as compared with the control group at 0.5 microg/ml, 1.0 ...
متن کاملOolong tea increases energy metabolism in Japanese females.
Oolong tea is a traditional Chinese tea that has long been believed to be beneficial to health such as decreasing body fat. We were interested in this assertion and tried to evaluate the effect of oolong tea on energy expenditure (EE) in comparison with green tea. The subjects were eleven healthy Japanese females (age 20+/-1 y; body mass index (BMI) 21.2+/-2.5 kg/m2) who each consumed of three ...
متن کاملMelanogenesis inhibition by an oolong tea extract in b16 mouse melanoma cells and UV-induced skin pigmentation in brownish guinea pigs.
To investigate the new physiological functions of oolong tea, the effects on melanogenesis were studied. An oolong tea extract inhibited melanogenesis without affecting cell growth in B16 mouse melanoma cells. However, the oolong tea extract hardly showed any inhibitory effect on mushroom tyrosinase in a cell-free system. The effects of an oolong tea extract on the intracellular tyrosinase leve...
متن کاملRelationship between antimutagenic activity and major components of various teas.
The objectives of this study were to determine the major components in tea leaves and tea extracts and to study the relationship between chemical content and antimutagenic activity of various tea extracts. The amount of catechins in various tea extracts was in the order: green tea (26.7%) > oolong tea (23.2%) > pouchong tea (15.8%) > black tea (4.3%). The amounts of caffeine and phenolic compou...
متن کاملReduced risk of dyslipidaemia with oolong tea consumption: a population-based study in southern China.
Experimental studies have suggested that tea consumption could lower the risk of dyslipidaemia. However, epidemiological evidence is limited, especially in southern China, where oolong tea is the most widely consumed beverage. We conducted a population-based case-control study to evaluate the association between consumption of tea, especially oolong tea, and risk of dyslipidaemia in Shantou, so...
